EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič says Brussels will not mediate between US and Canada

EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič has said that the European Union cannot act as a mediator in the trade war between Canada and the United States following the failure of their trade negotiations, Euronews reported.

Earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney withdrew from negotiations with the Donald Trump administration, accusing it of putting pressure on Canada. US President Donald Trump, in turn, announced 50% tariffs on Canadian passenger cars and trucks. In response, Ottawa imposed tariffs on more than 700 types of goods imported from the United States, with a total value of around $20 billion.

“I don’t think we are in a position to take on the role of mediator. At the same time, I know that Canada and the US have such close economic ties that, despite the current tensions, sooner or later attempts will be made to resolve the situation. We unequivocally stand for free and fair trade, with low tariffs or no tariffs at all,” Šefčovič said.
