Armenian Vice Speaker of Parliament, Japanese counterpart discuss development of ties

Vice President of the Armenian parliament Hakob Arshakyan has met with Hiroyuki Nagahama, the Vice President of the House of Councillors, the upper house of Japan’s parliament.

Arshakyan is in Japan for Expo 2025 and the inauguration of the TUMO center. 

The agenda of the Armenian-Japanese cooperation was discussed during the meeting, the parliament’s press service said in a readout.

Arshakyan underscored that Armenia highly values the comprehensive development of ties with Japan based on mutual respect and democratic values.

He said that Armenia is interested in deepening parliamentary cooperation given the central role of the parliaments of both nations. 

Arshakyan expressed gratitude for the Japanese support to Armenia, stressing the importance of Japan’s participation in the economic development of the country. The sides noted that untapped potential exists in economic and investment ties, as well as tourism and humanitarian exchanges. 

Arshakyan saluted Japanese scientist Yoshiaki Hagiwara, the laureate of the Global High-Tech Award presented by the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

The parties also discussed the Expo 2025 world expo, where Armenia is presenting its economic, cultural, tech, educational and tourism potential. In this context the parties highlighted the activities of the newly opened TUMO Gunma educational center, which will enable 1500 students with access to education for modern professions and developing skills. 

Arshakyan reiterated Armenia’s commitment to the agenda of establishing peace in the region, stressing the importance of unblocking connections, promoting economic cooperation and implementing the Crossroads of Peace project. He said Armenia is ready to sign the peace treaty with Azerbaijan and expects constructive approach from Baku.

Vice President of the House of Councillors of Japan’s legislature Hiroyuki Nagahama expressed support for the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace process, underscoring its importance for ensuring lasting and sustainable peace in the region.

Nagahama lauded the opening of the TUMO center in Japan as an important initiative for deepening educational cooperation and the relations with Armenia.

He expressed gratitude for introducing the innovative Armenian educational model in Japan.

Noting the significant potential for cooperation in high tech sector, the Japanese legislator reiterated readiness to support the development of economic cooperation.

He expressed gratitude for Armenia’s empathy and readiness to provide support during the 2024 earthquake.

He said that the convention on double tax avoidance between Armenia and Japan has been ratified by both houses of the Japanese legislature, expressing hope that it would contribute to growth in trade turnover between the two countries.

The parties reaffirmed the significance of mutual support in international platforms as an important factor to strengthen bilateral ties.
