Armenia plans to launch Abbott’s life-saving treatment for heart failure

Yerevan Deputy Mayor Sargis Madatyan, City Hall Healthcare Department Chief Davit Karapetyan and Nork Marash Medical Center Director Mikayel Adamyan have met with representatives of Abbott, the U.S. multinational medical devices and health care company.

The meeting focused on the introduction of the Artificial Heart project, a program designed for treating heart failure in Armenia.

Issues related to mapping the project, the pre and post-surgical steps and possible directions of exchange of experience between countries were discussed during the meeting.

A monitoring pertaining to the number of patients and the general situation in Armenia will be conducted with the purpose of launching the project. A specialized team will be formed to work around the project and select patients, City Hall said in a press release. The project is expected to save the lives of some 90 patients. According to City Hall, the project is the only life-saving program given the absence of heart transplant opportunities in Armenia.

The Abbott representatives briefed the City Hall officials on the ventricular assist device (VAD) therapy for cardiovascular diseases.
