Armenian Cabinet approves joining Ashgabat Agreement

The Armenian Cabinet approved on May 8 the bill on joining the Ashgabat Agreement.
The Ashgabat Agreement is a multimodal transport agreement between Iran, Oman, Qatar, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
The Armenian government noted in the decision to approve the accession that it will create new opportunities for transport and transit potential between member states and integration in the transport corridor between Central Asian countries and the ports of the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.
It will create reliable conditions for cargo and passenger transportation between member states, facilitation of multimodal transportation, optimization of transport costs, increasing the role of Armenia’s transit, increasing security of shipments of goods etc.
The agreement is in line with the Armenian government’s Crossroads of Peace project and will contribute to deepening of transport and economic cooperation in the region.
Pursuant to the standard procedure, the Cabinet will apply to the Constitutional Court to validate the constitutionality of the agreement before sending it to parliament for ratification.
