President of Armenia Vahagn Khachaturyan reiterated on Monday Yerevan’s readiness to sign a peace deal with Azerbaijan.
“We are consistent in our work pertaining to the signing of the peace agreement,” he said at a joint press conference with his visiting German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier, referring to the prospects of signing the peace treaty with Azerbaijan. “We have an objective of establishing peace in the region and specifically with Azerbaijan and we are carrying out concrete work to achieve that goal. We believe that the difficulties that exist and will exist are surmountable and any issue can be resolved around the negotiations table.”
The Armenian President said that the time for war and conflict has ended and South Caucasus doesn’t have resources for new wars.
“We’ve been in a war situation since 1988, and since 1991 on a larger scale. I’m not speaking about the other conflicts in our region. In this regard we are consistent. Optimism is based on pragmatism. We are realistic and we are making steps, which are not pushing our approaches farther from Azerbaijan, but on the contrary, bringing them closer. We will continue in the same spirit and we are sure that the day will come, because many didn’t even expect the objections that existed as part of the treaty to be resolved, but in March it turned out to be possible,” the president said, referring to the finalization of the talks around the terms of the peace treaty, stressing that the parties now have a document ready for signing.
