Iran doesn’t oppose the unblocking of connections in the South Caucasus but the process must be conducted based on respect towards the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity of the countries, Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Mehdi Sobhani has said.
“We’ve presented our position regarding the unblocking of connections multiple times. We do not oppose the unblocking of roads only in case of it being implemented under the national and territorial sovereignty of the countries. We are in favor of unblocking of the roads in the territory of Armenia, but it must be done based on respect for the national sovereignty and territorial integrity. We oppose any road that would include the logic of a corridor,” he said at a press conference.
The Azerbaijani authorities have been falsely claiming that Armenia has to provide an extraterritorial corridor through its territory connecting Azerbaijan proper with Nakhchivan exclave under the 2020 trilateral agreement signed between Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has numerously expressed readiness to unblock the connections in the region pursuant to the agreement based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. The agreement does not mention any obligation by Armenia regarding an extraterritorial corridor.
