ECHR to examine Armenian Constitutional Court’s application on Kocharyan case as priority

YEREVAN, AUGUST 7, ARMENPRESS. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has confirmed it has received the Armenian Constitutional Court’s application regarding the case of ex-President Robert Kocharyan, the Constitutional Court’s staff told ARMENPRESS.

According to a statement from the Constitutional Court, the ECHR has also said that the case will be examined as a priority.

Kocharyan is currently jailed amid a trial over his alleged “overthrowing of constitutional order” during the 2008 unrest in Yerevan.

His case was sent to the Constitutional Court by a lower court in Armenia, however the Constitutional Court itself halted proceedings and forwarded it to the ECHR and the Venice Commission for consultative opinions.
