Yerevan’s extra sanitation department to have fleet of 50 vehicles

YEREVAN, AUGUST 5, ARMENPRESS. The Yerevan Municipal Agency for Waste Disposal and Sanitation will have a fleet of 50 garbage trucks, the Yerevan City Hall said in a news release.

According to the City Hall the sanitation agency already has 10 vehicles and is already operating.

Director of the agency Armen Grigoryan noted that there is a waste disposal problem in a number of districts in the Armenian capital because the private waste management operator – Sanitek – doesn’t dispatch vehicles to those areas at all.

The Yerevan garbage crisis has been the center of heavy debates in the recent period with the City Hall and Sanitek exchanging accusations. However, mayor of Yerevan Hayk Marutyan has vowed to solve the problem “with or without Sanitek”.

The private company has been fined on numerous occasions for failure to comply with contract obligations.

According to Grigoryan, under the contract Sanitek had to install 16,000 waste containers in the city, however there are only 4,000 today, moreover most of them are damaged.

The city of Yerevan will install 4400 new waste containers at its own initiative. 400 are already in the city and the remainder will arrive within the upcoming months.
