YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 28, ARMENPRESS. In the sidelines of the working visit to the Brussels President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan met with President of the European Commission Jean-ClaudeJuncker on February 28.
As “Armenpress” was informed from the press service of the Armenian President’s Office, thanking for the cordial reception, the President of the Republic talked with satisfaction about the rather saturated and productive agenda of his Brussels visit, hoping that the sincere discussions with the President of the European Council Tusk, EPP President Daul, and High Representative Mogherini, as well as the upcoming meeting with the newly elected European Parliament President AntonioTajani will necessarily contribute to the deepening of relations between Armenia and the EU.
President Sargsyan highlighted the joint announcement on the previous day with President Tusk about the completion of the negotiations over the new Armenia-EU framework agreement that lasted for over a year. To the conviction of the President of Armenia, the new agreement will serve as a firm legal ground for expanding and developing Armenia-EU relations during the upcoming years and the mutual commitments enshrined in it will guide the large-scale political and economic reforms in Armenia which form the foundation of bilateral relations.
President Sargsyan hoped that apart from the agreements reached, in the near future the sides will also work in the direction of attracting Armenia-EU investments. At the same time the President hoped that EU’s assistance to Armenia will be continuous. Serzh Sargsyan noted that cooperation with the EU has already greatly contributed to a major progress in Armenia’s economic, justice and state governance spheres, reinforcement of democracy and institutions of human rights and fundamental freedoms and these facts are inarguable.
The sides discussed in detail Armenia-EU relations and their prospects. During the meeting with the President of the European Commission the President of Armenia underlined that Armenia, being an EAEU member state, attaches great importance to the development of economic relations with the EU aiming to continue and propel the reform agenda in various spheres in the country.
During the meeting the sides discussed the regional situation and the recent developments. Serzh Sargsyan and Jean-ClaudeJuncker touched upon Nagorno Karabakh issue. The President of Armenia introduced the recent developments and concerns over Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement.
President Sargsyan highly assessed the balanced stance of the EU on the peaceful settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict which is in line with the efforts and formulations of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-chairs, the sole internationally recognized format for the conflict settlement.
The interlocutors also exchanged ideas over the situation in the Middle East, including the Syrian crisis, referred to the problems of migrants, and the humanitarian aid provided by Armenia and many other countries to the friendly people of Syria and the Syrian-Armenians.
