The attack happened at about 8:30am when the woman entered the bird's enclosure.

In a statement, the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary said the woman was an experienced staff member.

She was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.

The sanctuary's senior veterinarian, Dr Michael Pyne, said the woman was going to feed the eagle and clean the cage.

Dr Pyne described the incident as unfortunate.

"The staff member suffered a lip injury and is currently undergoing treatment in hospital," he said.

"We wish her well in her recovery."
