1961 Ferrari 250 GT California sells for $17 million at Amelia Island auction

YEREVAN, MARCH 16, ARMENPRESS. A1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Californiasold at Gooding & Company’s Amelia Island auction over the weekend for a record-setting $17 million, on par with pre-sale estimates for the rare 1-of-37 cabriolet, “Armenpress” reports citing Fiat Chrysler Authority website.

The Ferrari 250 GT’s exact selling price was $17,160,000, setting the single lot record for a car at Amelia Island as well as for a Gooding & Company auction overall, the auction house said. The example sold, chassis 2871 GT, was purchased new in Milan in 1978 and had just three owners prior to the auction.

The Ferrari 250 GT SWB is an iconic Ferrari even to those wh oaren;’t particularly familiar with the brand due to its appearance in the cult classic ‘Ferries Bueller’s Day Off.’ In it, Ferris’ friend Camera ends up reversing the car through a garage and careening into a ravine. Luckily the movie car was just a replica, or Ferrari might’ve had a bone to pick with Cam.

Other notable Ferraris that sold at Gooding & Company Amelia Island include a 1995 Ferrari F50 , which fetched $2,310,000 and a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT Series II Cabriolet, which commanded $1,512,500.
