YEREVAN, JUNE 6, ARMENPRESS. About 1500 sex-selective abortions are made annually in Armenia. If this tendency keeps on, by 2060 approximately 100 thousand girls will not be born in Armenia. As reports “Armenpress”, on June 6, at the discussion on the draft law initiated by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia, this was mentioned by the UN Population Fund - Armenia Representative Garik Hayrapetyan, presenting the survey data of 2012-2013 "Sex-selective abortions and causes of interruptions in Armenia", which served as a basis to the draft law.

"According to the National Statistical Service, among the newborn children sex ratio deviation has occurred since 1991. By 2000, it has reached to a maximum of 120 boys/100 girls, while the ratio of the norm is 102-106/100. Today the index is 114/100, ten percent more than the norm. Since 1993 till today we have had 40 000 boy children more, who will now enter the reproductive age, and we'll start to see the real impact of this phenomenon on the social life" – said Hayrapetyan, adding that from this point of view, the most vulnerable regions are Gegharkunik and Aragatsotn, where the world's highest index is recorded - 124.
