Armenia on 5th position of FIDE’s ranking by country

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 1, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian men’s chess team appeared on the fifth position of FIDE’s new ranking list.

As reports “Armenpress” according to the country rank by average rating of top 10 players issued by FIDE Armenia occupies the fifth position. The thrice champions of the Chess Olympiad and incumbent champions of the world have 2658 points in their active. There are 36 GMs and 23 IMs in the Armenian team. The total number of titled players reached 98.

The Russian Federation tops the list with 221 GMs, 501 IMs and 2217 titled players. Ukraine is on the second place with 81 GMs, 196 IMs, and 501 titled players. China is the third with 34 GMs, 25 IMs, and 127 titled players. France occupies the fourth place with 47 GMs, 100 IMs and 371 titled players.

Previously, it was reported that in the FIDE November rankings Levon Aronyan took the second horizontal. The leader is the Norwegian Magnus Carlsen with 2870 points. The strongest chess player of Armenia Levon Aronyan has 2801 points. The top 10 includes Vladimir Kramnik, Hikaru Nakamura, Alexander Grischuk, Fabiano Caruana, Boris Gelfand, Viswanathan Anand, Veselin Topalov and Shakhriyar Mamedov.

It is worth mentioning that the current world champion Viswanathan Anand places the 8th with 2775 points.

In the top 10 of the world’s best chess players another four Armenians are included: Sergey Movsisyan places the 49th with 2700 points, Vladimir Hakobyan – 63rd with 2681, Gabriel Sargsyan – 71st with 2676 and Tigran Petrosyan – 89th with 2660 points. The French Armenian chess player Tigran Karamyan places the 91st with 2658 points.

Aronyan was born on 6 October 1982 in Yerevan, Armenia. An early sign of his ability came when he won the 1994 World Youth Chess Championship (under-12) in Szeged with 8/9, ahead of future luminaries Étienne Bacrot, Ruslan Ponomariov, Francisco Vallejo Pons, and Alexander Grischuk. Aronyan was declared the best sportsman of Armenia in 2005 and was awarded the title of "Honored Master of Sport of the Republic of Armenia" in 2009.

Aronyan won the Chess World Cup 2005. He led the Armenian national team to the Gold medals in the 2006 (Turin), 2008 (Dresden) and 2012 (Istanbul) Chess Olympics and at the World Team Chess Championship in Ningbo 2011. He won the FIDE Grand Prix 2008–2010, qualifying him for the Candidates tournament for the World Chess Championship 2012, where he was knocked out in the first round. He was also World Chess960 Champion in 2006 and 2007, World Rapid Chess Champion in 2009, and World Blitz Chess Champion in 2010.

Aronyan holds a diploma from the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture.

Aronyan played for Armenia in the Chess Olympiads of 1996, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2010. He took team bronze medal in 2004 and team gold medal in 2006, 2008 and 2012. In the 2010 Chess Olympiad he won the silver medal for his individual performance on board one. He was a member of the gold-medal winning Armenian team at the World Team Chess Championship in 2011.
