Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan has ordered officials to crack down on illegal parking operations in the capital, saying some state officials are facilitating the activity and profiting from it.
During Monday’s executive meeting at City Hall, the mayor said he has already formed an opinion about the issue of illegal parking, noting that there are individuals within the state system who facilitate the activity.
“I think this practice should be continuously eliminated from the city, from the city center,” Avinyan said.
He suggested that the Transport Department, jointly with the Trade Department, discuss options for bringing this activity into the legal framework so that individual state officials cannot benefit from the process.
“Given the growing number of cars in Yerevan, I suggest that the Transport Department, perhaps jointly with the Trade Department, come up with some solution so that this activity is within the legal framework and some mid-level officials do not make money from it,” the mayor said.
Avinyan said parking is one of the biggest problems in Yerevan, but added that this does not mean parking spaces should be available everywhere, particularly in the city center.
“In Yerevan, we have parking spaces that should be removed from certain streets to ensure continuous traffic flow and prevent obstructions. The solutions should be discussed very quickly. Solving transportation problems should be our priority,” the mayor said.
