Armenia’s U20 wrestling team head coach Movses Karapetyan and the World Championship medalists summed up the results of the World Championship.
At the U20 World Wrestling Championship, Samvel Terteryan won the gold medal for Armenia, Yurik Petrosyan won silver, while Erik Ter-Matevosyan and Yurik Mkhitaryan won bronze medals.
“We participated in this World Championship with a full squad and won four medals — one gold, one silver and two bronze. In fact, there was a good opportunity for us to win more medals. Overall, we have a competitive team. The team has now also gone through a generational transition,” coach Movses Karapetyan said at a press conference.
World Championship gold medalist Samvel Terteryan, summarizing the championship, emphasized that he had five bouts on his way to winning the gold medal.
“My goal is to repeat this result at the senior World Championship as well. I had studied my opponents at this U20 championship and knew them,” he said.
Runner-up Yurik Petrosyan said the championship had gone well for him.
“This is my first medal at a World Championship. My opponents in the qualification round and the other stages were serious and strong. My opponent in the final was more experienced,” Petrosyan noted.
Bronze medalist Erik Ter-Matevosyan emphasized that the preparation period for this championship had been at a high level.
“I had higher expectations of myself, but this time I was unable to win a medal higher than bronze. Now we know that we need to work harder to achieve a better result,” he stressed.
Yurik Mkhitaryan, who won a bronze medal at this championship, has only recently changed weight categories and needs more time to achieve a higher result.
“Last year, I competed in the 60 kg weight category, and I have only recently moved to the 67 kg weight category. Now we have what we have. It is time to move forward. I can say that this tournament went well for me,” he said.
