The discovery and seizure of illegal firearms and ammunition is a priority for police, Acting Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Armen Mkrtchyan has said.
“For several years now, recovering illegal firearms has been a priority for police. Last year, we seized a significant number of illegal firearms. A certain number of illegal firearms were also seized during the first half of this year.
“These are preventive measures that should contribute to reducing crimes committed with firearms, and we need to continue and further intensify this work,” Mkrtchyan said.
He explained that the illegal firearms seized, for example, last year or during the first half of this year, did not necessarily enter Armenia last year or this year. According to him, many of them are weapons of very old manufacture dating back to different periods.
“You know that the Republic of Armenia has experienced military hostilities during different periods, and international experience shows that such periods are often followed by an increase in illegal firearms,” Mkrtchyan said.
