UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has expressed serious concern over the rising number of civilian casualties amid escalating hostilities in Yemen and called for every effort to prevent the country from sliding into full-scale war, Euronews reports.
Yemen has already joined the countries drawn into the ongoing confrontation in the Middle East. This came after the Iran-backed Houthi movement effectively broke a 2022 truce with the Saudi-backed government by intensifying attacks on areas under its control.
The renewed escalation of violence could once again draw the impoverished country on the Arabian Peninsula into full-scale hostilities.
“I call on all parties to de-escalate tensions to spare the people of Yemen further suffering. The Yemeni people have already endured far too much hardship, given the devastating consequences of years of conflict, forced displacement and the humanitarian crisis. I strongly urge all parties to immediately cease any action that could lead to the resumption of full-scale conflict in Yemen,” Türk said.
