Stereotypes remain a major obstacle to the full realization of women’s rights, says Anahit Manasyan

Armenia’s Human Rights Defender, Anahit Manasyan, addressed the challenges and priorities in the protection of women’s rights during a panel discussion held on June 12 as part of the Nordic Days 2026 programme.

According to the Office of the Human Rights Defender, Manasyan stressed that persistent stereotypes regarding the social roles of women and men continue to hinder efforts to ensure equal opportunities for women and girls.

She also drew attention to the issue of early marriages in communities populated by national minorities, noting that the practice negatively affects girls’ access to education, personal development and the full exercise of their rights.

Manasyan highlighted the importance of human rights education, emphasizing that in Armenia, particularly in higher education institutions, human rights teaching still falls short of modern international standards and requires continued reform.

The discussion was also attended by Satu Koivu, head of the European Union Mission in Armenia, and Lara Aharonian, director of the Women’s Resource Center. The panel was moderated by Françoise Jacob.

Nordic Days 2026 is being held in Yerevan with the support of the Nordic Council of Ministers, in cooperation with the diplomatic missions of the Nordic countries and partner organizations.
