Armenia has joined the Board of Peace without a mandatory membership fee, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia Ani Badalyan said.
Responding to an inquiry from Armenpress regarding reports that joining the Board of Peace requires a $1 billion membership fee, Badalyan clarified that no such obligatory payment exists.
“The Charter of the Board of Peace provides for membership on the basis of voluntary financial contributions,” Badalyan said.
“A country invited by U.S. President Donald Trump may join the Board without a clearly defined membership fee for a period of up to three years. After the expiration of this period, participation is subject to review in accordance with the established procedure.”
She noted that Armenia's government approved participation in the Board of Peace under these conditions.
“The membership fee you refer to is voluntary and is applicable to the organization if, within one year after the charter enters into force, a request for permanent membership is submitted,” Badalyan said.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed the Charter of the Board of Peace in Davos on January 22. Armenia received the invitation to join the Board from U.S. President Donald Trump.
