Czech president lauds Armenia-Azerbaijan normalization process

Czech President Petr Pavel has lauded the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, emphasizing that the process began in Prague in 2022 and continued on August 8, 2025, in Washington.

He made the remarks during a joint press conference with Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan following their talks in Prague.

“We have good news that in the South Caucasus, which was a zone of conflict for a long time, the situation has calmed down, and relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan are being normalized. This path began in Prague in 2022 and ended on August 8 last year in Washington, when the process of normalization of relations and peace received new impetus,” President Pavel said.

He also addressed the process of normalization of Armenia-Türkiye relations, expressing hope that both the political and economic relations between Armenia and Türkiye will be strengthened, which is also in the interests of the Czech Republic and the European Union.

On October 6, 2022, on the sidelines of the first summit of the European Political Community in Prague, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, French President Emmanuel Macron and European Council President Charles Michel held a meeting, during which Armenia and Azerbaijan reaffirmed their commitment to the UN Charter and the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration, through which both sides recognize each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Armenia and Azerbaijan subsequently initialed a U.S.-brokered peace deal on August 8, 2025, in Washington.

During his official visit to the Czech Republic, the Armenian President also met on Thursday with Senate President Miloš Vystrčil at the Waldstein Palace. The meeting was also attended by the Senate Vice Presidents, as well as chairs of the committees on foreign affairs, defense and security, and EU affairs.

President Khachaturyan is also scheduled to meet with Chamber of Deputies Speaker Tomio Okamura.

The official visit will also include a meeting with representatives of the Armenian community in the Czech Republic, as well as an event titled “Solidarity: Commemorating the Czech Republic’s Support for Armenia Following the 1988 Earthquake.”

The event, planned at the Rothmayer Hall of Prague Castle, will include a meeting with firefighters who carried out a rescue mission in Armenia following the devastating earthquake of December 7, 1988, and organizers of a humanitarian fundraising campaign.
