Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has confirmed that the United States has made proposals regarding the unblocking of communications in the South Caucasus.
He emphasized that no discussions on this matter can take place without taking into account the principles of Armenia's territorial integrity and sovereignty.
When asked by a journalist whether a specific proposal had been received from the United States concerning the Syunik road, the Prime Minister responded: “Yes, we have received proposals from the United States.”
Pashinyan noted that Armenia has received and continues to receive various proposals from friendly countries and assured that the public being is informed about these proposals directly or indirectly, in one way or another.
“It is very important to emphasize that any issue is discussed based on the principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty, and jurisdiction of the Republic of Armenia,” the Prime Minister concluded.
Earlier, Carnegie Endowment analyst Olesya Vardanyan, citing two foreign diplomats, reported that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump had presented a proposal to Yerevan and Baku regarding a road linking Azerbaijan with Nakhichevan through Armenian territory.
According to these sources, the American proposal is similar to a version previously put forward by the European Union, which was based on a plan agreed upon between Russia and Georgia after the 2008 war. That plan involved transferring the management of routes passing through the disputed regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia to an independent Swiss company, which would then be responsible for sharing logistical data with all relevant parties.
