Chairman of Supreme Judicial Council receives EU Ambassador to Armenia

Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council Artur Atabekyan received the Ambassador of the European Union to Armenia, Vassilis Maragos.
According to a statement issued by the Supreme Judicial Council, Atabekyan expressed high appreciation for the EU's consistent support to Armenia’s judicial system, highlighting the Ambassador’s direct involvement and committed approach.
He emphasized the effectiveness of the Budget Support Programme “Support to Justice Sector Reforms in Armenia implemented by the European Union. In this context, the importance of continuing the program and implementing technical assistance initiatives was discussed.
Ambassador Maragos presented some details of a report developed in 2024 concerning Armenia’s judicial system.
The report includes sections on judicial system monitoring, the procedure for appointing judges, and mechanisms for the professional development of judges. He noted that the report will be presented to the professional community in the fall.
During the meeting, the parties also discussed issues related to the accessibility of the judicial system and the ongoing reforms.
Atabekyan referred to jointly implemented programs aimed at the training and capacity building of judicial personnel, made possible through EU support. He also presented key provisions of legislative drafts related to the justice sector.
He reaffirmed the importance of maintaining open dialogue with EU countries and stressed that improving the judiciary remains one of the priorities of a rule-of-law-based state.
