Iran calls on US to avoid unrealistic positions

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a telephone conversation EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas.

During their conversation, the two sides exchanged views on regional and international developments, according to a readout issued by the Iranian foreign ministry. 

“The Iranian foreign minister briefed the EU official on the latest progress in the indirect negotiations between Iran and the US,” it added.

Araghchi noted that Iran has adopted a “responsible approach as it has chosen the path of diplomacy to resolve the artificial concerns surrounding Tehran’s peaceful nuclear program.”

He stressed that progress in this process requires serious determination and realism from the other side.

 “Araghchi further noted that if, as claimed, the only concern is the potential for Iran to acquire nuclear weapons, this concern is solvable, and an agreement in this regard is entirely within reach. The top Iranian diplomat however added that the resolution of the issue requires avoiding unrealistic and illogical positions,” the foreign ministry of Iran said.

Referring to several rounds of discussions held over the past year with the three European countries, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s readiness to continue engagement with the European side, whether within the framework of the European Union or the E3 format.

He expressed hope that these dialogues would resume and continue in a constructive manner, free from political bias.

The Iranian foreign minister further elaborated on Iran’s position regarding the situation in Ukraine and stressed that the cooperation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation is not directed against any third country.

At the same time, he announced Iran’s readiness to enter into political dialogue with the European Union regarding mutual security concerns.

The EU foreign policy chief for her part welcomed the prospect of political dialogue with the Islamic Republic of Iran, according to the Iranian foreign ministry readout.

Ms. Kallas announced Europe’s readiness for further exchanges on current concerns, according to the readout.

Kallas, in a post on X, said she stressed the EU support for diplomacy on the nuclear issue and regional de-escalation. “I called on Iran to stop military support to Russia and raised concerns over detained EU citizens and human rights. EU-Iran ties hinge on progress in all areas,” she added.

US President Donald Trump earlier said the goal of the negotiations with Iran is to achieve "full dismantlement" of Tehran's nuclear program.
