The infrastructure of Yerevan's Zvartnots Airport is set to be expanded, which will lead to an improvement in the quality of services.
In an interview with Armenpress, Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of the Republic of Armenia, Armen Simonyan, stated that a significant investment program has been proposed by the concession manager, Corporación América. He also noted that there are certain legal issues related to the expansion that are currently under discussion.
"The Armenian government and the concession manager share common approaches on various issues, and we are now working on the legal formulations. As soon as the work is completed and we have tangible results, they will be made available to the public," Simonyan said.
Addressing the topic of building a new terminal at the airport, the Deputy Minister confirmed that this is also part of the investment program.
Meanwhile, those responsible are summarizing passenger flow data from Armenia's airports, which in 2024 were deemed satisfactory.
“It is true that there was a slight decline of about 1.3 percent compared to 2023, but in total, 5.4 million passengers were served by Armenian airports in 2024. Compared to 2019, this is a rather high figure. In 2024, five new airlines entered the Armenian market, and we hope that in 2025, new airlines will also begin operating flights to and from Armenia,” the Deputy Minister said.
The trends remain positive, and Simonyan is optimistic that passenger traffic will continue to grow. He noted that discussions are ongoing with various airlines about several mechanisms aimed at stimulating passenger traffic growth at both Zvartnots and Gyumri's Shirak airports.
Armenia's removal from the EU's "black list" will also contribute to the increase in passenger traffic. The Deputy Minister explained that, through joint efforts, Armenia has addressed more than four dozen deficiencies identified by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency.
While a specific date for Armenia's removal from the EU "black list" cannot yet be confirmed, the Deputy Minister stated that the process is bilateral. Armenia has provided all the required information, and they are now awaiting a response from EU partners.
Argentine businessman and National Hero of Armenia, Eduardo Eurnekian, is the owner of Corporación América, which has been managing the concession of Zvartnots Airport since 2002.
