U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a new baseline 10% tariff on goods from all countries plus reciprocal tariffs on those that his administration says have high barriers to U.S. imports,
Rates are even higher for 60 countries or trading blocs that have a high trade deficit with the US.
China, the second top exporter to the US behind Mexico, will now face a 54% tariff and has threatened countermeasures, CNN reported.
Trump posted the list of countries and tariff rates on Truth Social.
He said the new tariffs would take effect April 5.
Suren Sargsyan, an expert on US, commented on the measures, noting that it would lead to higher prices of Armenian goods in the American market. “Of course, this means a price hike of Armenian goods in the US market, which would impact competitiveness. Some key areas could be hurt due to decreased demand, particularly aluminum, gemstones, precious metals, agricultural product and alcoholic beverage exports,” he said in a statement on social media.
Armenia mostly exports to the US alcohol, textile products such as carpets, diamonds and other gemstones and semi-precious metals, as well as aluminum.
