EU bill authors expect security umbrella to cover Armenia

The authors of the EU integration bill in Armenia reiterated Monday that the path to accession to the bloc will increase the country’s security.
Artak Zeynalyan, a former minister of justice who is one of the initiators of the EU integration bill was asked by opposition Hayastan bloc MP Armen Gevorgyan about expectations from the EU in the security sector.
“We expect the security that the EU has to cover Armenia during the process of accession. When Armenia will become an EU member it will become part of the same security system as the EU,” Zeynalyan said, stressing the multi-component nature of security encompassing not only the military but economy, democracy and the institutions providing the security.
“By becoming a member of the EU or proceeding in that direction we expect to come under that security umbrella,” Zeynalyan said at the parliamentary EU integration affairs committee hearing about the bill.
The Armenian parliament on February 12 adopted the bill on EU accession at first reading.
The second and final reading was postponed afterwards for technical reasons.
