UN official briefed on Armenia COP17 organizational matters

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has met with Astrid Schomaker, Executive Secretary of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity ahead of the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) to be held in Armenia in 2026.
FM Mirzoyan congratulated Schomaker on the successful COP16 where the Armenian delegation was actively involved.
He said that hosting the COP17 would be a great honor for Armenia. FM Mirzoyan said the country has already taken several steps for successful hosting of the event.
He presented the current work, emphasizing that it is implemented on the level of the Cabinet with the involvement of all stakeholders.
FM Mirzoyan underscored the effective and inclusive organization of the event and importance of partnership with the secretariat of the convention, among other partners.
Astrid Schomaker said, “It is very important for us to see Armenia’s progress on the global arena as a biodiversity pioneer in the next two years. From today we are one team, we must work hand in hand in order for COP17 to be a success. We are very optimistic that it will be a successful conference, as well as a wonderful chance for people visiting from various parts of the world to explore Armenia and get to know your culture.”
Both sides underscored the unique importance of COP17, given that it will mark the first global review of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
The sides discussed the COP17 agenda, including the development of priorities, ensuring inclusiveness and public awareness.
