YEREVAN, DECEMBER 27, ARMENPRESS. The Crossroads of Peace project presented by Armenia, which envisages the development of transport connections with neighboring countries through railway and automobile road connectivity, will lead to the increase of the capacity of the Armenian section of the North-South corridor, Eurasian Economic Commission Minister in charge of Energy and Infrastructure Arzybek Kozhoshev has said.
In an interview with Izvestiya newspaper, the EEC minister said the North-South project is one of the most important ones for Eurasian Economic Union countries.
“Armenia has presented the Crossroads of Peace initiative, in line with which it is planned to develop transport connection with neighboring countries through railway and automobile connections,” he said.
The EEC official added that they have prepared the draft 2030 joint action plan covering the EEU and CIS transport corridors. It envisages the preparation and implementation of documents encompassing EEU and CIS laws on transportation, infrastructure, material-technical supply and development of international transport corridors.
“Thus, two major integration structures in the Eurasian territory, the EEU and the CIS, will have the opportunity to conduct simultaneous work in the direction of development of transport infrastructures and overall development of transportation,” the EEC minister said, adding that the draft action plan is now in the process of approval in CIS countries.
EEU countries are focused on the development of the North-South international transport corridor as one of the priority directions of transport development for the entire union.
“The corridor is considered to be one of the promising projects for ensuring a new level of transport connection between the markets of our countries and main partners. It is also planned to become a strong and reliable Eurasian transport route in the development of the EEU sustainable transportation circle,” Kozhoshev said.
The EEU has always prioritized new commercial routes.
Work is underway to develop the ports in the Caspian Sea basin, and establishing direct ferry connection towards the Caspian Sea. EEU countries are discussing the participation of Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Iran, India, Qatar, Kenya, UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Uzbekistan in the development of the corridor.
