Inter-Parliamentary Union Secretary-General praises Armenian Parliament for its young composition

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 12, ARMENPRESS. The Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Martin Chungong, considers the Armenian Parliament an excellent example of youth representation. In an interview with journalists during the 10th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians in Yerevan, Chungong praised Armenia's hospitality and the organization of the conference.

Three years ago, an agreement was reached with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Alen Simonyan, to host the conference in Armenia. Martin Chungong noted that the Armenian National Assembly has one of the youngest groups of parliamentarians.

"This means that the parliament in this country is very representative and inclusive," Chungong said. He also highlighted that the Inter-Parliamentary Union has been working for years to ensure greater representation of young people in parliaments, and he considers Armenia as a good example in this regard.

According to Chungong, the fact that the 10th Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians is being held in Yerevan opens up significant opportunities for Armenia. The conference is dedicated to issues related to youth education and employment. He added that the discussions within the conference could lead to decisions that positively impact the quality of life for young people.

Hasmik Hakobyan, a member of the "Civil Agreement" faction of the National Assembly of Armenia and the Inter-Parliamentary Union, noted that the conference would yield results for parliamentarians from all participating countries. Delegations from around 60 countries are represented, with a total of 317 participants.

"This provides us with an opportunity to engage with our international partners on a broader scale. The conference involves not only representatives from the Armenian Parliament but also members of the government, political society, and other active groups interested in the topic," she said.

The MP noted that after the Revolution, the newly formed government was often criticized for including many young officials. "Being young is a significant benefit. Since the Revolution, we have seen greater involvement of young people in both the Parliament and the Government," she said.

Hakobyan noted that during the conference, she would address the rights of forcibly displaced youth from Nagorno-Karabakh and the ongoing efforts and solutions related to this issue.

Sara Falaknaz, a member of the Federal National Council of the United Arab Emirates participating in the conference, thanked the Armenian government and Parliament for their warm hospitality and for organizing this important event.

"This is a crucial platform for young people to come together, discuss important issues from various fields, and find sustainable solutions," said Falaknaz, emphasizing the importance of inclusiveness in the decision-making process.
