YEREVAN, OCTOBER 12, ARMENPRESS. Students and academic staff of the V. Brusov State University in Yerevan are on strike protesting against a planned move by the government to merge the university with another educational institution.
The Rector of the Brusov State University, Karine Harutyunyan, who organized and is leading the strike, says they found out about the plan only on October 11, and that the move involves merging the Brusov State University and the State Institute of Physical Culture and Sport into the Pedagogical University.
Harutyunyan said they will officially appeal to the education minister over the matter.
She said the issue hasn’t been discussed with them.
“The university has a history of 90 years and has its special position in the higher education system. We don’t want our university to be merged with another university under any scenario. We all concur over this matter, this issue must be discussed. I am asking the students to delegate 50 people who will engage in the discussions with the ministry and government officials. Academic staff will also participate in these discussions,” the rector said at the strike.
Meanwhile, education authorities told ARMENPRESS that they will soon issue an official statement on the matter.
