YEREVAN, AUGUST 17, ARMENPRESS. President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan was watching the final bout of Greco-Roman wrestling in Rio de Janeiro, where Arthur Alexanyan was competing for gold.
Photos published by the Presidential Administration depict the degree of excitement of the President when Alexanyan defeated the Cuban wrestler and became Olympic Champion, winning gold for Armenia for the first time in 20 years.
President of the Olympic Committee of Armenia Gagik Tsarukyan, Presidential Chief-of-Staff Vigen Sargsyan and Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Gabriel Sargsyan were also among the audience.
Team ARMENIA has won the first gold medal in Rio 2016.
Armenia’s Greco Roman wrestler Arthur Alexanyan defeated Cuba’s Yasmany Lugo at the Greco-Roman 98kg final.
The last time Armenia won gold at Olympic Games was 20 years ago, when Armen Nazaryan became Olympic champion in wrestling in Atlanta, 1996.
