Generals of the Victory: Hayk Tumanyan

YEREVAN, AUGUST 25, ARMENPRESS. Armenian distinguished military figure Hayk Tumanyan was born in Tiflis, on May 12, 1901. Young Hayk served in the Red Army in 1924. During those years the latter occupied different positions from commander’s assistant to 3rd Battalion commander in the Military division of the Pacific.

At the beginning of the Patriotic War Tumanyan was in charge of the guerrilla movement in the Northwestern direction.

Before counterattack toward Stalingrad Hayk Tumanyna had a quarrel with the commander and had hit him. The latter according to him was delaying the fulfillment of the order. Headof thepolitical departmentof theRed ArmyA.S.Shcherbakov reported about the incident to Stalinsuggesting to file lawsuit against Tumanyan but Stalin replied :

"I know Tumanyan very well. Leave him alone.”

Soviet Army Lieutenant-General Hayk Ghazar Tumanyan passed away in Moscow 1971.
