Annual liturgy canceled at Saint Mark Church of Van

YEREVAN, AUGUST 24, ARMENPRESS. The liturgy held on the first Sunday of each September has been canceled at Saint Mark Church located on the island of Akhtamar in Lake Van.

“Armenpress” reports that the information comes from the website of patriarchate of Constantinople.

It was mentioned that the annual pilgrimage to the Church organized on September 6 will not be held.

“Taking into account the recent terrorist acts in the region and the information about casualties, as well as not to bring forwards security threats in the city of Van and its surrounding, the annual pilgrimage to Saint Mark is canceled”, is mentioned in the website.

Saint Mark Church of Van was built by the Armenian King Gagik I during 915-921. The architect was Manvel. This is considered one of the brilliant examples of Armenian medieval architecture.
