YEREVAN, JULY 25, ARMENPRESS:The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia Galust Sahakyan expressed gratitude to the President of the Chamber of Representatives of Belgium Siegfried Bracke. The press service of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia informed Armenpress that the message of Galust Sahakyan says in particular:
“Dear Mr. President,
Let me express my deepest gratitude to you for the adoption of the resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire in 1915. I am certain that this step of the Chamber of Representatives of Belgium will have its contribution in the prevention of such crimes against the humanity in the future.
The Chamber of Representatives of Belgium once again proved its commitment to the highest values, professed by the entire Belgian nation.
Please, accept my deepest respect, dear Mr. President”.
Earlier it was reported that the Belgian Chamber of Representatives voted for the resolution on the Armenian Genocide. 124 members of the Chamber of Representatives voted for the resolution and 8 of them remained neutral. There were no speeches of denial at the plenary session of the Chamber of Representatives which took place on July 22. All the speakers acknowledged that what happened to the Armenians at the beginning of the 20th century was genocide. The draft resolution on the centenary of the Armenian Genocide was submitted by MP Peter De Roover, who calls on Turkey to recognize the Armenian Genocide and to reconcile the Armenians and Turks “in hopes of bright universal future”. In 1998 the Parliament of Belgium Recognized the Armenian Genocide on the level of the upper house (Senate).
