YEREVAN, 21 MARCH, ARMENPRESS. Kessab is currently in peace, but it would be wrong to think there will be everlasting peace in Kessab. This is what Arabologist Armen Petrosyan said during a March 21 press conference. “Everyone knows that the attack on Kessab last year was from Turkey and was tolerated by the authorities. This means that nobody can guarantee that there won’t be a similar attack, taking into account the fact that Turkey has interests with Kessab,” Petrosyan mentioned, as “Armenpress” reports.
The other danger facing Kessab are Syria’s anti-government forces, which have rather stable positions in the Idlib state located west from Kessab. “The areas in this state are mainly under the control of several opposition groups and they have a bigger influence here. From this angle, a new attack on Kessab is not ruled out since Kessab is located in the Latakia state, which is mainly a region inhabited by President Bashar al-Assad’s descendants and is a target,” the Arabologist said, adding that Syria’s governmental forces became more present in that area after last year’s incidents, especially on the border with Turkey, which is of strategic importance for the governmental forces at this moment.
The Arabologist noted that today marks the first anniversary of the terrorists’ attack on Kessab and reminded that the Syrian governmental forces managed to liberate Kessab on 14 June, after which some of the displaced residents were able to return to their homes. After that, some military operations took place near Kessab.
