YEREVAN, APRIL 24, ARMENPRESS: ‘We will not allow the Nagorno Karabakh to become a captive of Baku,’ RA President Serzh Sargsyan stated in an interview to the Russian ‘Novosti’ news agency. He mentioned that the issue of the NKR sovereignty is one of the causes and central problems of the conflict. He added that some other issues can be solved only after the normalization of the NKR conflict.
‘In case Azerbaijan recognizes the independence of the Nagorno Karabakh, the issue will be settled within a few minutes,’ the President said. He mentioned that the people of Nagorno Karabakh endeavored to ‘correct the historical mistake and injustice of the policy of Stalin by quite peaceful and legal means, within the frames of the USSR legislation and the international law. But yet in contrast to people’s peaceful rallies Azerbaijan used forces, violence and then- war.
The President noted that the people of the Nagorno Karabakh managed to unite in such a crucial moment for defending their homeland, the women, the old and the children. ‘The war was not our choice; we just did not have any other way out and we had to defend ourselves. And now, there is no any alternative to the peaceful settlement of the conflict: it can be settled only through mutual concessions,’ the President said. He mentioned that official Yerevan is inclined to have positive dialogues with Baku on the base of constructive positions and efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group.
RA President Serzh Sargsyan did not exclude the risk of military actions and mentioned that the risk will exist until the peace and stability rule the region, until the negotiating sides sign a peace treaty. The President says the attempts of Azerbaijan to settle the conflict with the help of armed forces is something like an adventure and it will be disastrous for Azerbaijan. He also mentioned that military actions will destabilize the region and will deepen, not settle the conflict. The President assured that Armenia is willing to promote direct discussions between Baku and Stepanakert.
