125th ANNIVERSARY OF DERENIK DEMIRCHIAN°S BIRTH MARKED IN AKHALKALAK

AKHALKALAK, JULY 22, ARMENPRESS:The 125th Anniversary of birth of Derenik Demirchian (1877-1956) was marked on July 20 in Akhalkalak, the writer°s birth-place. The celebration was attended by the delegations of city of Yerevan and Samtse-Javakheti province, led by Deputy Mayor of Yerevan Vardan Vardapetian and Governor of Samtse-Javakheti province Temur Mosiashvili. The celebration ceremony started at newly reconstructed school after Derenik Demirchian, which was reconstructed by means of delegation of Yerevan led by Mayor Robert Nazarian, which visited Akhalkalak last year. The school°s management expressed gratitude for support received from Yerevan, which helped to reconstruct the school. It was also informed that 2002 is announced a year of Derenik Demirchian. The teachers and pupils of the school participated in discussions of different works of the writer which were held within the framework of ceremony. Then, the guests went to city park and laid flowers to Demirchian°s monument (by Suren Stepanian). The ceremony entitled Yerevan Culture Days were concluded by a gathering, during which speeches about Derenik Demirchian were delivered by Temur Mosiashvili, Vardan Vardapetian, director of Akhalkalak regional department Artyusha Hambartsumian, chairman of Javakhk union, general editor of Armenian Encyclopedia Hovhannes Ayvazian, director of Institute of Literature of Armenian National Academy of Sciences Azat Eghiazarian and others. In the end of the ceremony a concert was performed by art workers of Armenia and Javakhk.
