CBD Executive Secretary praises Armenia’s efforts in organizing COP17

Executive Secretary of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Astrid Schomaker praised Armenia for its efforts to organize COP17 and the Leaders’ Summit.

Speaking at the COP17 opening ceremony, Schomaker highlighted Armenia’s hospitality and the country’s significant contribution to the conference preparations.

“Armenia is extending its hospitality to the fullest, and anyone who spends even a few hours here will immediately feel the kindness and warmth of your people. Armenia’s contribution to the conference preparations was truly significant. Thousands of people have come here for COP17,” she said.

According to Schomaker, the conference demonstrates that multilateral cooperation continues to function despite geopolitical tensions and the deepening climate crisis.

Schomaker emphasized that the Leaders’ Summit once again highlighted the importance of the issue of biodiversity loss, while the global review of progress scheduled for the coming days will be of key importance.

“Organizing a COP conference under the Convention is no small task. Thanks to its diligence, Armenia has overcome this challenge, and we can see the results here,” Schomaker said.
