Food safety agents probe alleged insecticide spraying at Yerevan fruit shop

Armenia’s Food Safety Inspection Body dispatched inspectors to a fruit-and-vegetable shop in Yerevan to take samples and investigate an allegation that an employee had sprayed insecticide on fruits being sold, following a video that went viral on social media.

The Food Safety Inspection Body said its Rapid Response Department took immediate measures based on the video, in which a citizen claimed to have seen an employee at a fruit-and-vegetable shop at 33/4 Saryan Street in Yerevan spraying insecticide on fruits being sold.

“Based on the video circulated on social media and generating public attention, in which a citizen claims to have seen an employee of a fruit-and-vegetable shop (Yerevan, 33/4 Saryan Street) spraying an insecticide on fruits being sold, the Rapid Response Department of the Food Safety Inspection Body undertook immediate control measures. Samples were taken on site and submitted for laboratory testing,” the Inspection Body said.

The Inspection Body said it will provide the public with additional information on the results of the inspection and laboratory tests.

The employee does not deny the allegation in the video posted online.
