Russia warns Armenia over risks of economic rift

The Kremlin has warned that a breakdown in economic ties with Russia could lead to economic difficulties for Armenia.

Russia’s presidential envoy Boris Titov, in an interview with Sputnik Azerbaijan, said that the developments could subsequently result in some Armenian products being replaced by Azerbaijani goods in the Russian market.

He said that such developments would, first of all, affect the Armenian economy.

According to him, the potential impact could be felt in both the energy and food markets.

“Energy prices for Armenia could approach European levels, while food prices on the domestic market could rise,” he said.

“And what we lose in Armenia, of course, we will replace, including with products supplied from Azerbaijan,” the Russian presidential envoy said.

Russia has been imposing growing restrictions in recent weeks on the import of Armenian goods, ranging from flowers and certain fruits and vegetables to Jermuk mineral water, citing phytosanitary violations.

The Armenian government has moved to roll out relief programs for exporters to help them find new markets and avoid losses.
