Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced on Friday that he would attend a Sunday church service again, this time at Saint Gevorg Church in Aygeshat, a village in Armavir Province.
"On Sunday, December 14, I will participate in the Divine Liturgy at St. Gevorg Church in Aygeshat, Metsamor municipality, Armavir Province," Pashinyan said on Facebook.
Pashinyan has been attending Sunday morning church services across the country as part of efforts to initiate what he describes as a reform of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
Earlier this week, Pashinyan unveiled a plan he referred to as a “roadmap for reforming” the Church after Catholicos Karekin II steps down—a step that the latter has so far refused to take. Pashinyan has been calling for Karekin II to resign, alleging that the church leader is holding office illegitimately. The PM stated that after Karekin II's "removal", the Church ought to elect a locum tenens to oversee the adoption of a new Canon Law, ultimately leading to the election of a new Catholicos.
