Pashinyan explains proposal to incorporate national anthem in churches before Sunday Liturgies

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Monday explained his proposal for the Armenian Church to incorporate the national anthem in all churches before Sunday mass.

“In the text of the Divine Liturgy of the Armenian Apostolic Church, there is a passage with which priests essentially begin the service: ‘O profound and unfathomable Mystery, infinite, whose supreme realm abides in the veil of unapproachable light, You adorned the ranks of the fiery beings with exceedingly exalted glory.’ In other words, it speaks of a supreme dominion — a state. Playing the national anthem before the liturgy would signify the connection between the supreme [heavenly] and earthly states.

I believe we should also discuss the presence of the Armenian national flag either at the entrance of churches or inside them throughout the Republic of Armenia, which is common practice in several countries,” the Prime Minister said in a video posted on his Facebook page.

After attending a Sunday liturgy on December 7 in Gyumri, Pashinyan suggested that the national anthem should be performed in every church before the liturgy begins.
