Construction at the Tatev-Aghvani road in Syunik province is in full swing and it is expected to boost tourism. The road is part of the strategically and economically significant North-South interstate highway.
Syunik Governor Robert Ghukasyan told visiting reporters at the construction site that locals have been waiting for this project a long time because motorists are currently using the Tatev-Ltsen road, which is difficult to pass for passenger vehicles.
The three-layer asphalting work will be completed in a few days and the road will be operational.
“The road is important especially in terms of tourism, because many domestic and foreign tourists visit the Tatev church complex. Now they will have convenient conditions for traveling,” Ghukasyan said.
The road is expected to significantly reduce traffic jams because Tatev-Aghvani road will be more beneficial for passenger vehicles, while cargo trucks will continue to use the Ltsen road.
The cost of the reconstruction project is over 3,3 billion drams and will cover a 19,5km road section. The work is expected to be completed in 2025.
Meanwhile, the reconstruction of another road section, the Vorotan-Khot, is also in full swing. This road is an alternative to the previous Vorotan-Goris road which Azerbaijan took over following the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War. The 10,3km long road is expected to be completed this year. The cost of the project is over 4,2 billion drams.
Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures David Khudatyan highlighted the strategic importance of this road for the entire country. He said the road is very safe and will reduce travel time. The road will be an efficient link between Vorotan and Bardzravan, as well as Shurnukh and Kapan.
A 7,2km long road in the Harzhis municipality is also under construction.
