Armenia records driest winter since 1935, says chief meteorologist

The 2024-2025 winter was the driest since 1935, the head of the meteorological center of Armenia has said.

Levon Azizyan, the Director of the Hydrometeorology and Monitoring Center of Armenia, told reporters on Friday that the average precipitation in the 2024-2025 winter was 55mm, which is just 49% of the norm.

“January was especially dry, when the average monthly precipitation was 18% of the norm. It was the second driest January since 1999. Regarding the snow cover, as of March 25, 2025, snow cover was observed only in areas above 1800-meter altitude, with the exception of some parts in Lori and Tavush provinces,” he added.

He said that the high-altitude monitoring station on Mount Aragats shows that the snow cover was 168cm, which is 40-50cm lower compared to the previous year.
