Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed shared interests as strategic partners during their phone call on Tuesday, the U.S. State Department said in its readout.

“Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan discussed shared interests as strategic partners.  The Secretary welcomed the agreement on a peace treaty with Azerbaijan and underlined the importance of a lasting peace to break the cycle of regional conflict and bring security and prosperity to the South Caucasus.  The Secretary and Prime Minister agreed that escalation of any form in the South Caucasus is unacceptable,” the U.S. State Department said.

The Armenian Prime Minister’s Office earlier said in its readout of the call that Pashinyan and Rubio discussed "issues related to the Armenia-U.S. strategic partnership, as well as the regional agenda."

PM Pashinyan briefed the U.S. Secretary of State on the negotiation processes that resulted in concluding the talks on the draft peace agreement with Azerbaijan and emphasized that the deal is awaiting signing, the Armenian Prime Minister’s Office said. Pashinyan and Rubio also agreed to maintain high-level Armenia-U.S. contacts.

On March 13, Armenia and Azerbaijan announced that the talks on the terms of the draft peace agreement have been finalized. On the same day, Armenia offered to start discussions to choose a venue and date for signing the agreement, but Azerbaijan hasn’t yet responded.
