The situation in the South Caucasus doesn’t neccessarily depend on the developments around Ukraine, Armenian FM Ararat Mirzoyan has said.
Mirzoyan said Wednesday that although the situation in South Caucasus could mostly depend on developments around Ukraine, nonetheless there are some additional opportunities that could be implemented in the region and which are not dependent on processes around Ukraine.
Speaking about global developments, Mirzoyan told reporters that the Ukraine conflict has affected every country in the Eurasian continent.
“Essentially the world is now focused on several issues, and it won’t be an exaggeration to say that the first, or one of the first, are the efforts or the stances of various countries for ending the Ukraine conflict,” Mirzoyan said at a joint press conference with the foreign minister of the Netherlands Caspar Veldkamp, when asked on possible impact of Ukraine developments on South Caucasus.
Mirzoyan said that the situation in the South Caucasus could greatly depend on the issue.
“Nothing around the world is in a vacuum, and there is interconnectivity between various issues. However, there are also additional efforts and opportunities that could be implemented in South Caucasus, even not depending on the processes around Ukraine,” Mirzoyan said.
He reiterated that Armenia is ready to sign a peace treaty with Azerbaijan as soon as possible and end the chapter of hostility.
Although the treaty can’t resolve all issues, Mirzoyan said, it can be the beginning for the successful conclusion of the entire process.
Speaking about the normalization process with Turkiye, FM Mirzoyan emphasized that Armenia has a constructive approach in this matter.
“In the same manner we are ready to bring our dialogue with Turkiye to a positive conclusion as soon as possible, by establishing diplomatic relations and opening borders, which has been regularly voiced by both Armenia and Turkiye. Therefore, these processes, in a sense, could even surpass or proceed parallel with the developments around Ukraine,” Mirzoyan said.
