YEREVAN, JANUARY 7, ARMENPRESS. There have been no cases of Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Armenia since April 2024, according to healthcare authorities.
The National Center For Disease Control and Prevention of Armenia said that 10 cases of HMPV were recorded in 2023, and 50 cases in January-April 2024. Since then the laboratory tests did not reveal new cases.
The NCDC advises frequent hand-washing with soap, avoiding contact with persons who have flu-like symptoms and frequent disinfection of surfaces.
The NCDC said it maintains constant contact with the World Health Organization’s Armenia office and will provide updates.
China has recently reported a surge in cases of the flu-like human metapneumovirus (HMPV), especially among children, and it attributed this to a seasonal spike.
HMPV is not a novel disease and it has been around for decades.
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) can cause upper and lower respiratory disease in people of all ages, especially among young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms commonly associated with HMPV include cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. Clinical symptoms of HMPV infection may progress to bronchitis or pneumonia and are similar to other viruses that cause upper and lower respiratory infections. The estimated incubation period is 3 to 6 days.
According to the U.S. CDC, the HMPV is most likely spread from an infected person to others through:
secretions from coughing and sneezing
close personal contact, such as touching or shaking hands
touching objects or surfaces that have the viruses on them then touching the mouth, nose, or eyes
People with flu like symptoms are advised to stay at home and contact a doctor.
