BRUSSELS, NOVEMBER 22, ARMENPRESS. The Chamber of Deputies of Luxembourg has adopted three resolutions regarding the Azerbaijani authorities’ human rights violations, disregard for democratic values and restrictions of civil liberties, as well as the dismissals of opposition mayors in Turkey, which constitutes a threat to democracy.

The Chamber of Deputies adopted the resolutions after Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel presented a declaration about foreign policy.

The resolution on the human rights violations in Azerbaijan is based on reports of a number of international organizations, such as the PACE, OSCE, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, which point out the violations of civil rights and liberties in Azerbaijan, as well as the previously adopted resolutions about Azerbaijan, Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.

The resolution strongly condemns the decision by the Azerbaijani government on declaring 76 members (deputies) of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), including Luxembourg deputies Octavie Modert and Yves Cruchten, as personae non gratae, calls on the Azerbaijani regime to respect human rights and democratic values, as well as ensure the free activities of the civil society. The resolution calls on the government of Luxembourg to place the fulfillment of these demands at the foundation of its relations with Azerbaijan. The Chamber condemns the sanctions imposed by the Azerbaijani authorities and demands the immediate and unconditional release of all unlawfully detained persons.

Another adopted resolution makes similar calls, urging the government of Luxembourg, among other actions, to support all initiatives aimed at the immediate and unconditional release of political prisoners in Azerbaijan.

The Chamber of Deputies of Luxembourg also focused on Turkey and the existing situation there in relation to the pressures against opposition forces. The resolution condemns the sackings of opposition mayors in Turkey, describing it as a threat to democracy. The resolution calls on the government of Luxembourg to launch a dialogue aimed at emphasizing the importance of maintaining democratic principles.
