Ahead of COP29, Azerbaijan must show sincere desire for peace – says French FM

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 16, ARMENPRESS. Azerbaijan must show before the COP29 in November that it sincerely wants to achieve peace, French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Stéphane Séjourné said on Monday in Yerevan.

Speaking at a press conference, he said he discussed with his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan the Armenia-Azerbaijan relations, among others.

“France supports the signing of an agreement that would establish fair and sustainable peace, and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both countries. This is the whole essence of the document signed in Alma Ata in 1991. The same idea was presented to the political community in Prague in 2022,” the French FM said, highlighting the establishment of peace.

Speaking about the Armenia-Azerbaijan delimitation process, the French FM said the agreement reached on August 30 is going in the right direction. France supports this process, based on principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, he said.

“The South Caucasus should become a region of peace and cooperation that would enable to develop trade, and Armenia will prosper,” the French FM said.

France, just like Armenia, and the international community, wants peace, Séjourné said.

“Since Azerbaijan is soon going to host COP29, it is its obligation to show ahead of COP29 that it sincerely wants to achieve peace. I think we must be able to swiftly advance in the direction of this topic,” he said.
