Russia says it never abandoned role of ‘honest’ mediator between Armenia and Azerbaijan

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 4, ARMENPRESS. Russia never abandoned its role of an “honest mediator” in the Armenia-Azerbaijan talks, Moscow’s envoy to Armenia has said.

“Russia never abandoned its role of an honest mediator in the negotiations process between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The latest contacts of Russian President Vladimir Putin, particularly his August 18-19 state visit to Azerbaijan and the phone calls with [Armenian Prime Minister] Nikol Pashinyan and [Azerbaijani President] Ilham Aliyev, which focused on the Armenia-Azerbaijan normalization issues, clearly confirm this,” Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergei Kopyrkin said in an interview for the Allies: CSTO publication.

Ambassador Kopyrkin again credited President Putin for ending the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War and developing the mechanism of the trilateral task force dealing with unblocking of economic and transport connections in the region.

“We are sincerely interested in the success of the negotiations, in prosperity and peace for our closest neighbors, colleagues and allies,” he said, adding that an Armenia-Azerbaijan balanced peace treaty would be an irreplaceable precondition to build the architecture of security and sustainable social-economic development.
